Granite is one of the more durable countertop surfaces, but it is not free from problems. In a heavily used kitchen, oil and water can work into open pores and leave dark areas behind. Chips, cracks, and a worn or failed sealer are also signs that granite countertop restoration may be needed.

Marble is one of the most beautiful countertop materials, but it does need regular care. It can be finished with a soft honed look or polished to a higher shine. Quartz countertops combine quartz aggregate with resin binders to create a beautiful, low-porosity surface. The resin makes them sensitive to high heat, UV exposure, and certain chemicals. Dark or solid colors often show haze, discoloration, and other surface problems sooner than lighter patterns.

Quartzite can be one of the most beautiful natural stones in a home, especially on large islands and waterfall edges. It is generally more resistant to acids than marble, but it can still absorb moisture, darken, chip, or lose its finish. Travertine countertops are less common, but we do maintain and restore them. We see them most often on bathroom vanities. Porcelain countertops are durable, highly resistant to stains, and easy to maintain. The broad surface handles everyday use well, while thinner edges and mitered corners need more protection from impact. Small chips can often be repaired, though damage through a printed pattern may remain slightly visible.

Corian is a man-made solid surface made from acrylic resin and mineral filler. It handles daily use well, but its softer surface can develop knife marks, scratches, stains, and haze. With the right care, many of these problems can be sanded out and the countertop refinished in place.

Not every mark on a countertop means the same thing. Before we recommend anything, we sort out which of these it actually is:
Soap scum, cleaner buildup, or a cloudy layer sitting on top of the stone. Nothing has happened to the material itself. It usually wipes or scrapes off with a material-safe cleaner, no restoration needed.
Something has penetrated the stone's pores and darkened it, though the surface still feels smooth. We identify the stain type, oil, water-based, organic, or metallic, before poulticing it back out.
An acid reaction has dissolved the surface of marble, travertine, or a stone sold as "quartzite" that is actually calcareous underneath. It shows up dull, lighter, or rough under raking light. No cleaner or sealer fixes an etch, only mechanical honing does.
The stone has been physically chipped, cracked, or lost fill. We check the substrate and support underneath before any cosmetic repair, since a crack filled without addressing the cause just reopens.

Richmond's humidity can slow the way moisture dries around sinks, seams, and other heavily used areas. On porous stone such as granite, marble, and travertine, trapped moisture may darken part of the surface and leave the countertop looking uneven. Keeping these areas dry and maintaining the sealer helps limit how much moisture the stone absorbs.
