What is wrong with my marble?
An etch is a lighter, dull patch where acid dissolved the polish. A stain is darker, because something soaked into the stone.
Dull wear is a flat path where feet or cleaning pads have worn the shine down. Scratches show as fine lines that catch the light.
The difference decides the fix. No cleaner removes an etch, and no polish lifts a stain.
What restoring or refinishing marble involves
We start by cleaning, so we are looking at the stone and not the grime on it. Then we hone to level etching and scratches, polish to bring back the shine, and seal.
Not every job needs every step. A worn lane across a floor may need all four, while a single ring on a counter may only need polishing.
Sealer slows stains and never stops etching, so we say so up front. Stun marks, the white bruises left by an impact, will not polish out, and we tell you before we start.

Why Richmond conditions matter
City of Richmond water is moderately hard, around 81 ppm, so mineral scale builds on shower walls and around faucets. Chesterfield County water is softer, about 40 to 70 ppm, so scale is less of a problem there.
Central Virginia also averages about 64% humidity, so water sits longer on marble and in the grout around it. Scale comes off marble mechanically and never with acid, which would etch the stone.
We are based in Chester and restore marble in homes and businesses across Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield and Midlothian.
How a marble job runs
- Send photos
Text a wide shot and a close-up, lit from the side so marks show.
- Name the problem
We tell you whether it is etch, stain, wear or scratches, and what will help.
- Clean, hone, polish
We protect the room, then work through only the steps your stone needs.
- Seal and advise
We seal where it makes sense and explain what to keep off the stone.
Common questions
Will my marble look new again?
Often it looks very close, though marble keeps its veining and its age. A light etch can polish out, a deeper one needs honing first, and stun marks may stay faintly visible. We tell you before we start.
How long does marble restoration take?
Small surfaces like a vanity are often done in a day, and floors take longer depending on the area and condition. We give you a realistic timeline once we have seen your photos.
Can etching come back after restoration?
Yes. Honed or polished, marble etches whenever acid touches it. Sealer never prevents that, but wiping spills quickly helps and a honed finish hides new marks better.
How do I tell an etch from a stain?
An etch is lighter and dull, and honing or polishing fixes it. A stain is darker because it soaked in, and a poultice draws it out. A photo usually shows which one you have.
What about chips and cracks?
We look at them and tell you honestly what will and will not help. Send a photo and we will say plainly whether we are the right call.
Every marble job is priced after we see the stone. Texted photos get a straight answer at no charge; an in-person visit is $75–$125, credited to the job if you book.
