Polishing counters and vanities

On a counter or vanity, the shine fades from water rings, cleaner film and daily wiping. Polishing works the surface until it reflects evenly again.

We mask the cabinets, sinks and walls first, then polish the stone in stages.

Marble countertop polishing and marble table polishing follow the same steps. A dining table also gets a close look for heat rings and scratches.

Most polishing questions come down to one thing: is it dull because the polish wore, or because something etched it? A photo taken with a lamp or window light skimming across the stone usually answers that.

Tub decks, showers and tables

Tub decks stay wet and collect bath products, so they dull faster than most surfaces. We tape off the room, polish the deck and leave the tub and fixtures clean.

Chalky patches in a marble shower that vanish when wet are usually etching from acidic cleaners. Honing and polishing can address that, and we look at the whole shower before we promise anything.

Tables and other loose pieces are worked where they stand, with the floor and nearby furniture covered first. We check edges and corners too, since that is where hands and cups do the most damage.

When polishing is not enough

Polishing shines a surface that is already level. A light etch may polish out, but a deeper one needs honing first, blended well past the mark so it does not leave a dip.

Honed marble, the soft matte finish, still etches, hides it better and absorbs more, so it needs sealing more often. Stun marks, the white bruises left by an impact, will not polish out, and we tell you before the job.

Sealer slows stains and never stops etching. For the wider picture, see our page on marble restoration.

Floors, and where we work

Marble floors are a different job, so they have their own page on marble floor polishing.

We are based in Chester and polish marble across Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield and Midlothian.

How marble polishing works

  1. Send photos

Text a wide shot and a close-up, lit from the side so marks show.

  2. Check the finish

We confirm etch, stain or wear, and whether honing has to come first.

  3. Mask and polish

We protect cabinets and fixtures, then polish the stone in stages.

  4. Review and care

We check the result in side light and explain daily care.

Common questions

Will polished marble look new?

It often looks much closer to new, with a clear, even shine. Veining, age and any stun marks stay part of the stone. We say what to expect before we begin.

How long does marble polishing take?

A vanity or a small counter is often done in a day. Larger kitchens and showers take longer. We give you a realistic timeline after seeing photos.

Can etching come back after polishing?

Yes, any time acid touches the stone. Lemon, vinegar, wine and many bathroom cleaners do it. Sealer slows stains but never stops etching, so quick wiping is your best defense.

Is polishing the same as honing?

No. Honing levels the surface and leaves a soft matte look, and polishing then brings up the shine. Deeper etching needs honing first, and some people stop at honed.

Can you polish a marble table?

Yes. We work it where it stands, after covering the floor around it. We check for heat rings and scratches and tell you what polishing can and cannot clear.

Every marble job is priced after we see the stone. Texted photos get a straight answer at no charge; an in-person visit is $75–$125, credited to the job if you book.
