Practical surface guide

How to Clean Travertine Tile Without Dulling It

Clean travertine with warm water, a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft microfiber mop. Keep vinegar, bleach and bathroom sprays off it. Travertine is calcium-based stone, so acids etch the surface the moment they touch it.

What You Need for Travertine Cleaning

A short kit does the whole job.

  • A pH-neutral stone cleaner
  • A microfiber mop with clean pads
  • A soft nylon brush for grout and open holes
  • Two buckets, one for cleaner and one for rinse water
  • Dry towels

Keep these off it: vinegar, lemon, bleach and ammonia mixes, generic tub-and-tile sprays, abrasive powders, and steam on unsealed or filled travertine.

Acids dissolve the surface and leave dull etch marks. Harsh mixes and scouring powders strip sealer and scratch the finish.

How to Clean Travertine Floors

  1. Dry-dust or vacuum first with a soft head. Grit is what scratches stone underfoot.
  2. Mix the neutral cleaner with warm water at the label ratio.
  3. Damp-mop one small area at a time. Wring the mop well so water does not pool in the holes and grout.
  4. Work the grout lines and open pits with the soft brush.
  5. Rinse with a fresh mop and clean water from the second bucket. This step is what stops film.
  6. Dry with towels or a dry microfiber pad.

Dust-mop weekly and wet-clean as the floor needs it. Save the full process above for a deep clean every few months.

Wipe spills right away, and put mats at the doors to catch grit.

How to Clean a Travertine Shower

Squeegee the walls and floor after each use. It takes thirty seconds and keeps water from sitting in the stone.

Once a week, wash with the same neutral cleaner and rinse well. For soap scum, use a stone-safe alkaline cleaner, never an acid descaler.

Open holes and grout collect soap and grime first, so brush them gently. If the holes were filled and the fill has worn away, that is a repair, not a cleaning problem.

Powder or crust that keeps returning in a shower points to moisture moving through the stone. Repeated sealing will not fix it, so text a photo and we will look at where it starts.

Why Travertine Stays Cloudy After Cleaning

Cloudiness usually has one of five causes, and each needs a different fix.

Is It Cleaner Residue?

A dull film that wipes into streaks is usually soap or cleaner left behind. Rinse with plain water and dry; it often clears within a pass or two.

Is It Etching From Acid?

Dull spots shaped like a drip or splash are etch marks. They are in the surface, so no cleaner will remove them.

Is It Old or Failed Sealer?

Uneven haze, patchy sheen or a sticky feel can come from worn or poorly removed sealer. Cleaning harder tends to make it worse.

Is It White Powder?

Loose white powder is usually efflorescence, salt left behind as moisture moves through the stone and dries. Wiping it off gives only a temporary fix because the moisture source is still there.

Is It Mildew?

Gray or green growth in pores and grout means the stone stays damp. Central Virginia averages about 64% humidity, and humid summers keep showers, basements and pool decks wet for longer.

Shaded patios and decks with leaf litter grow mildew fastest, so sweep them often and let them drain.

City of Richmond water is moderately hard at 81 ppm, according to the 2025 Department of Public Utilities Consumer Confidence Report. On Richmond water, mineral spotting is possible if drops dry on the stone. Chesterfield water is naturally soft, so film there is more often leftover cleaner.

Travertine Cleaning and Sealing: When to Call a Pro

Seal travertine after a deep clean, never over dirt or haze. Sealer locks in whatever is under it, so a dull film ends up sealed under the new coat.

If the stone stays dull after a careful clean, our travertine floor polishing and natural stone floor restoration bring back an even finish. Grimy joints are covered by our tile and grout cleaning, followed by grout sealing to keep the lines cleaner longer.

Travertine vanities and tops have their own care steps. See our page on travertine countertops.

Text a photo of the area and tell us what you have already used on it. Condition and size set the price, and a photo shows us both.

Measured steps.
A considered result.

  1. Share the surface

Send a full view and a close-up of the concern.

  2. Confirm the material

Identify what it is before choosing a method.

  3. Set the scope

Separate cleaning, finish work, and repair needs.

  4. Refine with care

Use a process compatible with the existing surface.

  5. Review the finish

Inspect the result and discuss ongoing care.

Clarity before
the visit.

Can I use vinegar on travertine?

No. Vinegar is an acid, and travertine is calcium-based stone. It etches the surface on contact and leaves dull spots that cleaning cannot remove.

Can you steam clean travertine?

Steam can push heat and water into unsealed or filled travertine and loosen the fill. Warm water and a neutral cleaner are the safer routine. If you want steam used on a specific floor, text a photo first.

How often should travertine be sealed?

It depends on the stone, the room and the traffic, so there is no fixed calendar. Put a few water drops on the surface. If they darken the stone within a few minutes, the sealer is worn and it is time to talk about resealing.
